Intro to Contemporary British Literature

The contemporary period in British Literature was a very unique time; it was a time of poverty and prosperity, inflation and instability, where common themes tied authors together. Their works are inspired by ideas of mysticism and magic, ideas that will transcend time, making their works immortal in relevance. We will bring you the history leading up to this contemporary period, as well as themes, authors, works and much more.

Historical Background

The period of time before the Contemporary Period was in a state of turmoil. World War II had left Europe, especially Great Britian,
in shambles. The German bombings had crushed the British spirits, as well as their surroundings. The colonies of the once great British empire were declaring their independence, and with the building of the Suez Canal, the British colonial empire effectively collapsed. When this was mixed with the social change spurned by World War II, a new era of British culture was born.

Authors

The contemporary period is incredibly diverse with a variety of different genres, themes, and writing styles. Many authors borrow themes from the previous age of modernism and focus on themes of disillusionment, cynicism, depression, and a loss in faith. In later literature many authors have also focused on more positive themes like friendship and love.
